In playing the role of an owner/builder, this project presented a great opportunity to experiment, as well as an enormous learning curve.
As owner builder on site everyday, heavily involved in the construction, project management and distribution of funds it was possible to really come to terms the logistics of the process as a whole.
The project was completed slowly as funds became available, but the budget was approximately $180 K.
Costs exceeded the original estimate as labour hours were under calculated and some unforseen earth works were required.
Some items held an initial high purchase cost, yet would pay for themselves over the long term, such as the solar HWS.
Water tanks attract a rebate, making them more financially favourable.
Found objects and good quality second hand items were used where possible in order to reduce costs as well as for their aesthetic contribution to the project.
Cost effectiveness in using some second hand materials was questioned, as in some cases the labour involved in bringing an item to a suitable level of finish outweighed the original cost saving.
