ENVIRONMENTAL / ENERGY EFFICIENCY

An interest in the building's existence over the long term generated the need for a flexible design and employment of good building practice by constructing a building to last.

With a project of this nature the aim was to work with the existing building as much as possible, in order to reduce waste and where possible, materials from demolition were cleaned and reused or disposed of responsibly.

Of great importance is the intrinsic value of individual items in order that they have a life beyond this project and can be reused or recycled.

Each item of joinery or kitchen unit is like an independent piece of furniture which has the potential to be reconfigured or relocated, ultimately extending its life span.

Second hand materials such as porcelain bathroom sinks, re-worked terrazzo panels and recycled timber posts, beams and doors work along side shop-fitting systems which were used to provide adjustable and demountable shelves and hanging racks.

Use of non-toxic products such as paints, floor oils, natural cleaning products and the inclusion of a worm farm and water tank for the garden were always a high priority.
