STRUCTURE, CONSTRUCTION, MATERIALS & SERVICES

Respect for the existing building was important, with a focus on the use of responsible and complimentary construction methods and good quality materials.

The building's structure is regular, based on standard construction techniques, for economic as well as environmental reasons.

The existing party wall is typical sandstock brick with the new side walls of cavity brick and the rear elevation combining a rendered brick structural blade and timber framed doors.

Walls are standard brick construction with slab on ground to the rear extension.

The upper level is timber floor with timber framed bathroom and loft.

A carefully selected palette of materials was chosen, including sandstone and bricks from the site and recycled terrazzo for panels and bench tops.

Found objects and good quality second hand items were used where possible in order to reduce costs as well as for their aesthetic contribution to the project.

Stainless steel frames were made to support bathroom and laundry benches with the intention that they could be relocated if required.

Easy access to services was a priority to allow easy maintenance, with flexible plumbing pipes used in the kitchen, in keeping with the demountable nature of the project's furniture.
